Who Helped Me Get Through My Divorce?

When you work in the divorce field like I do, everything you talk about becomes very tactical—mortgage planning, real property division, financial clarity. It’s important, of course. But sometimes, the real heart of how we survive difficult seasons gets buried underneath the to-do lists and timelines.

So today, I want to share something I don’t talk about often—something deeply personal.

Who helped me get through my divorce?

God did.

When I was going through my divorce, my children were teenagers. We had moved, and I was no longer leading children’s ministries like I did when they were little and we lived in Elizabeth, Colorado. Back then, I was always busy prepping for Sunday School or organizing the children’s choir—even though I couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket!

But during my divorce, there was no “busy” to hide in. It was just me, navigating the unknown, feeling raw and broken, and turning to God in the quiet spaces.

I remember one moment so clearly: I was sitting in the grass at the ballpark, waiting for my kids and their dad to arrive for a game. That quiet, in-between time—just me, alone with my thoughts—was when I pulled out a book that would stay with me for years to come: The Power of a Positive Woman by Karol Ladd.

That book helped me reconnect with a strength I had almost forgotten: my strength through faith. The final page in the book still speaks to me like a prayer. Here’s a piece of it:

“As positive women we must make positive choices every day:

  • Choose to have faith instead of doubt.
  • Choose to search for wisdom instead of wandering aimlessly in life.
  • Choose to pray instead of worrying and fretting.
  • Choose to experience joy instead of bitterness.
  • Choose to love instead of hate.
  • Choose to live courageously instead of in fear.
  • Choose to have hope instead of despair.
  • Choose to live enthusiastically, knowing that God has a purpose and a plan for your life, and He will empower you to live it out.”

Right above my desk now hangs a wooden sign with Philippians 4:6-7:
“Do not be anxious about anything…”

It’s a reminder that no matter what season we’re in, we’re never walking through it alone.

So, who helped me get through my divorce?

It wasn’t just strategy. It wasn’t just support. It was my faith.

And the truth is, the power of a positive woman isn’t her power at all—it’s God’s.

If you’re facing your own hard season right now—whether it’s divorce, grief, or just feeling lost—I want to encourage you:

God still shows up.

Even in the quietest, loneliest places.
You don’t have to have it all figured out.

Just keep showing up… and trust that He’ll meet you there.
